Dallas Mavericks Offseason Transactions Analysis

I have been a Dallas Mavericks fan since the year 2000, and they are a team I am most passionate about. My moods can shift with how good or bad they are playing. Naturally 2010/2011 was a fantastic year as I never imagined we would Hoist the Larry O Brien Trophy. I always believe and have faith in my teams, but I have been conditioned over so many disappointing seasons, to never get my hopes up when it comes to the Mavs.

So anyway, most people can't think straight through their emotions once the season ends and decisions have to be made.  Truth is, Dallas NEVER win the NBA championship if they don't acquire Tyson Chandler. He provided the defensive presence and toughness the team never had and toughened the team into a championship contender.

That being said, Mark Cuban made the right decision not giving Chandler 56 million over 4 years. Chandler is a valuable player, but 14 million hamstrings the salary cap and I still don't trust Chandler to remain healthy or focused that long.

J.J. Barea also was instrumental in the championship run, but JJ can be boom or bust. Often he gets beat on Defense and he takes bad shots or turns the ball over at the worst possible moment. If you look what is left on the roster with Roddy Beaubois,Dominique Jones and Still with Jason Terry, I think they can more than fill in for Barea.

New Players acquired:  I have never been a Vince Carter fan, and this move still is baffling to me. I think he has no heart, poor attitude and is not a chemistry or winning player. I suppose, if he accepts his role, he could lend some offensive value to the team, not sure if he starts or comes off the bench which makes me wonder if his ego can accept that.

Lamar Odom:  Dallas just gave up a trade exception and a pick to acquire one of the most versatile players in the game. I think he will be less distracted in Dallas and play even better than he did in LA which would be scary. He is a triple double waiting to happen every night.

Potential starting lineups are  endless.
PG Kidd
SG Carter
SF Odom
PF Dirk
C Haywood

PG Kidd
SG Beaubois
SF Marion
PF Dirk
CHaywood
That would bring in 2 of the best 6th men in recent NBA history Jason Terry and Lamar Odom in off the bench.
Dallas' depth is still exceptional and loaded especially if Ian Mahinmi can continue to develop at Center. At times Dallas could also stick Dirk at Center, Odom at PF, Marion at SF, Carter at SG and would be virtually unguardable.

The goal, which is no secret, is for Dallas to acquire Dallas native Deron Williams, once he becomes a free agent after this season. So all these moves keep Dallas competitive,in contention, and potentially sets the table for the future of the franchise post Dirk Nowitzki.
